Railfanning The Stevenson/Bridgeport Area

Once again rivals NS and CSX join forces. This time in Stevenson, Alabama. The Nashville to Chattanooga CSX route joins the Memphis to Chattanooga NS route for the 33 mile trip into Chattanooga. Stevenson begins a stretch of double track on the CSX.

The CSX and NS cross the Tennessee river at Bridgeport on CSX trackage. The double track changes to single track here for the trip across the river. There is a nice Spanish mission style depot at Bridgeport as well as a very small CSX yard. The depot appears to be in the process of renovation and should be a great attraction when finished. Both towns make great locations for watching modern day heavy duty railroading.I suspect this area sees over 30 trains a day.

Pushing on the rear of Norfolk Southern empty coal train, 737, is a BNSF SD70MAC. A nice change of pace from the usual modern GE units.

We spotted a string of these loaded AEX hoppers in the CSX yard in Bridgeport. I wonder if these are related to the operations at the US Gypsum plant in Bridgeport.
