Railfanning the Middle and SouthEast Tennessee August 18, 2007
|
|
|
This trip report covers our railfanning along the CSX S&NA North Subdivision as
well as the Chattanooga Subdivision. The S&NA North Subdivision runs from Nashville, TN
to Birmingham, AL while the Chattanooga Subdivision connects Nashsville and
Chattanooga, TN.
We headed out north to check out the new (as of mid-2007) CSX siding at Chapel Hill, TN.
It would seem that business as good as CSX has added two new sidings to the S&NA
North (Chapel Hill, TN and Carey, AL) as well as done track upgrades in a number
of places including a double crossover at Middle Holmes Gap (Cullman, AL).
After hitting Chapel Hill, TN, we headed over to Shelbyville, TN to check out the
Walking Horse and Eastern shortline and their FP7, coach and combine car used
for excursion operations. I am not sure of the current status, but it doesn't
look like the excursion train has been moved in a while. Anyone have any info?
From Shelbyville, we headed towards Tullahoma, TN along the CSX Chattanooga Sub.
We had lunch and caught a couple photos of the station and a restored bay window
caboose in Tullahoma.
Next stop was Cowan, TN, home of the Cowan Pusher District. CSX stages pusher
engines in Cowan to assist trains over the 2% grade south and 2.5% grade north
over the Cumberland Mountain. There is a museum in the old station building in
Cowan and plenty of room to sit and watch the action! This is a great railfanning
spot!
After leaving Cowan, we headed south along the CSX Chattanooga Sub and caught a
couple photos/videos at Tantallon, Sherwood and Anderson. At Stevenson, AL, we
headed back west to call it a day! A great day of railfanning, indeed! Thanks
for looking! I took the photos and my step-son Donnie manned the video camera and did a fine job!
