Hiwassee River Rails Adventure October 11, 2008

Here are some photos from our trip on the Hiwassee River Rails Adventure this past weekend, 10-11-2008. We were lucky enough to meet up with good friends and fellow railfans Richard Musgrove and Claire Denlea as well as meet some new friends Jim and Pam Larduskey. We stayed Friday night in Etowah, TN and snapped a few night photos near the depot. Saturday morning, it was off to ride Hiwassee River Rails Adventure train. The train ran from just south of Etoway to Copperhill, TN across the famous L&N Hook and Eye. It was quite a trip and hard to do this route justice through photos so I didn't really take a whole bunch but I would recommend the ride if you get a chance!

After the train ride, Richard, Jim and myself went scouting for some trains around Etowah but only managed to bag CSX U466 changing crews, then heading south. Sunday morning we headed back towards north Alabama but made some stopovers along the way. The first location was Ooltewah, TN. Here the double track headed out of Chattanooga splits with a line heading north towards Knoxville and another heading south to Atlanta.

Check out the photo #12 of the large concrete silo next to the NS mainline in Ooltewah, TN. Does anyone have an idea if this is railroad related or not and if so, what is it? From the information Richard recounted, this may have been a good sized interlocking at one time.

The couple photos and video clip are on the way home while rolling through the Chattanooga to Nickajack Lake area. This is beautiful country and I can't wait to get back up and do some more exploring around Chattanooga!
