Railfanning The Atmore/Flomaton Area

While neither Atmore nor Flomaton are very large towns, they both could certainly be considered a hot bed of rail activity! Both towns lie on CSX's Montgomery, AL to Mobile, AL main line. Flomaton is also a subdivision point where the line south to Pensacola, FL joins the Alabama line. Besides the usual CSX traffic, heavy in intermodal and coal trains, the area also features two Alabama shortlines. The Alabama Railroad operates from Corduroy, AL to Flomaton to interchage with CSX. I have not been able to photograph the Alabama Railroad yet, but you can find a photo on Ken Roble's page in the Visitor's Photos section of the site. The other shortline featured in the area is the Alabama and Gulf Coast Railway, which operates a 141 mile ex-BNSF line from Kimbrough, AL to Pensacola, FL. A really neat feature in Atmore is the A&GC's overpass over the CSX main line, which makes for some neat photo opportunities. I only have a few photos currently of the A&GC Railway and you can find them on the Shortlines/Industrials page. This LRC C30-7 was spotted in a north bound CSX freight that had apparently gone "on the law" in the siding at Nokomis, just south of Atmore, AL. The crew had broken the train up in order to clear crossings before going off duty.

We followed north bound CSX Q522 from Atmore all the way to Flomaton, AL. Here you can see Q522 as it rolls into the small yard. The line headed south to Pensacola, FL can be seen on the left.

The crew of this south bound CSX freight is struggling to keep their train moving. We heard the drama on the scanner shortly before as the train was experiencing engine troubles. He rolled by us at no more than 10 mph headed towards Atmore, AL.
